Nasal hygiene is like tooth-brushing: it should be a daily routine
The key to proper nasal hygiene :
We shower and brush our teeth every day; in the same way, we should also cleanse the nasal fossae in order to breathe freely and maintain the essential functions of the nose.
Good nasal hygiene keeps our « nasal assets » healthy
The use of a sea water solution delivered as a fine mist maintains our nose in good health by clearing secretions and restoring moisture to the nasal mucosa, so as to optimise breathing through the nose.
Good nasal hygiene consists in cleansing the nose at least first thing in the morning and last thing at night, then blowing the nose with a paper tissue.
Nasal hygiene in babies :
Nasal hygiene is especially important in very young babies because in the first few months of life, a baby breathes mainly through his nose and yet doesn’t know how to blow his nose.
If baby’s nose is blocked, he will suffer from a real discomfort when eating, drinking or sleeping. Clearing impurities from baby’s nose facilitates breathing and makes it easier to take the bottle.
Nasal hygiene in children and adults :
Nasay hygiene is especially important :
- When getting ready for bed, since when we sleep we breathe mainly through our nose whereas during the day we also breathe through our mouths.
- To learn how to blow the nose. Up to the age 10 or 12, children are so busy running, laughing and playing that they forget to blow their nose…as a result they sniff a lot and have been known to wipe a nose on a sleeve in the playground !
Just as we learn how to walk, so we should learn to blow our nose. Nasal cleansing facilitates the process of learning to blow the nose.
